IPFW Falls On The Road At South Dakota State 13-12
5/6/2016 9:43:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW had a season-high 19 hits and took leads of 3-0 in the second inning, 5-3 in the fourth, 9-5 in the fifth and 10-5 in the sixth inning. SDSU, though, responded with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for its first lead of the game at 11-10. The weather got involved at that point, as lightning in the area halted the contest for just over an hour prior to the start of the eighth inning. When the game did resume, the Jackrabbits added two runs in the eighth, while the Mastodons scored two runs in the ninth inning for the final one-run margin.
In the second, redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (1-5, RBI) drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Following an infield single by Wilson (3-5, RBI), Logan crossed the plate on an RBI single by redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-3, RBI), who advanced a base on a fielding error. Soat (6-6, 6 RBIs) provided a clutch two-out, two-run single that plated both Wilson and Baker for an early 3-0 advantage.
In the fourth, Baker reached base on a two-out walk and moved to third on a single by junior Jackson Boyce (3-5, RBI). Soat followed with a run-scoring single that scored Baker, before an RBI double from Whitman (3-6, RBI) plated Boyce to make it a 5-3 lead for IPFW.
In the fifth, redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (0-4, RBI) walked to open the frame, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Logan and moved to third on a single by senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-5). Wilson followed with an RBI single to score Trevino, and Valenzuela-Reece crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Boyce. Soat added a two-run double during the at bat that scored both Baker and Boyce … Baker had reached base on a fielder's choice just ahead of Boyce's plate appearance, as the Mastodons built a four-run margin at 9-5.
In the sixth, Logan hit a one-out, solo home run to right field for his fourth homer this season. In the ninth, Boyce reached on an infield single to lead-off, advanced to second on a wild pitched and scored on an RBI double by Soat. Soat moved to third on a one-out double by redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (1-6), and crossed the plate courtesy of a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Trevino that also moved Kaiser to third. Unfortunately, Kaiser was stranded at third base at game's end.
Sophomore Evan Miller started for IPFW and pitched just 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and five walks. Freshman Adam Neal tossed 1.0 inning, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and no walks. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps (1-1) pitched 1.1 innings in defeat, yielding one hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned, with one strikeout and three walks.
SDSU was led offensively by Paul Jacobson (2-5, 4 RBIs) with two hits and four RBIs, including a two-run home run, while Austin Kost (1-1) gained the mound win with 2.0 innings of late relief, and Landon Busch (1) earned the save with the final 2.0 innings.
