IPFW Wins Again At South Dakota State, 18-7, To Take Road Series
5/8/2016 6:58:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW posted season-highs in runs, hits (19), RBIs (18), triples (2) and total bases (36) in the series finale at South Dakota State. The Mastodons scored in every inning against the Jackrabbits en route to the game ending per the run rule after seven innings. IPFW scored two runs in the first, five in the second, one in the third, six in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in seventh.
In the first, Soat (5-5, 2 RBIs) opened the game with a single, that was followed by a one-out single from Kaiser (4-5, 7 RBIs). Redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (2-5, 2 RBIs) and redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (2-4, RBI) each added run-scoring singles with one out that plated Soat and Kaiser, respectively, for the early 2-0 advantage.
The Mastodons added five more runs in the second, getting a grand slam home run to left field from Kaiser, whose blast scored junior Jackson Boyce (2-5), senior Kendall Whitman (2-4, 2 RBIs) and Soat … Boyce and Whitman had each singled, while Soat drew a walk. Whitman's hit also produced an RBI, as redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-4, 3 RBIs), who had walked to open the frame, crossed the plate on the play.
In the third, Soat singled to score senior Grant Wilson (1-2, RBI), who had walked. In the fourth, IPFW got a pair of three-run home runs … the first from Baker down the left field line that plated both Logan and Wilson, each reaching base when hit by a pitch, while Kaiser added his second homer of the day -- this time to left center field -- that also scored Soat and Whitman, who had each singled. It was the first home run of the season by Baker, while Kaiser increased his team-leading total to 11.
In the fifth, Logan and Wilson hit back-to-back doubles, the latter down the left field line giving Wilson an RBI as Logan scored. In the sixth, Soat tripled and scored courtesy of a sacrifice fly RBI to left field by Whitman. Kaiser and Trevino followed with consecutive doubles, the latter to right center field to plate Kaiser. In the seventh, redshirt-freshman Alec Reuille (0-0) drew a pinch-hit walk and later scored on an RBI triple down the right field line by Soat … his second-straight triple in the contest.
Redshirt-senior Brandon Pease (2-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the win, scattering seven hits and five runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Adam Neal tossed one-third of an inning, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Junior Jordan Martin pitched two-thirds of an inning, retiring both batters that he faced with no strikeouts and no walks. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber tossed the final 1.0 scoreless inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced with no walks.
SDSU was led offensively by Matt Johnson (2-4, 2 RBIs) with two hits and two RBIs, including a home run, while Ryan Froom (2-6) started for the Jackrabbits and pitched the first 2.0 innings in defeat … allowing seven hits and eight runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and three walks.
