Fort Wayne Men’s Soccer Earns 4-3 (2 OT) Win Over UTRGV
9/19/2016 10:53:00 PM | Men's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oscar Uyamadu's goal in the 104th minute gave Fort Wayne men's soccer a 4-3 (2 OT) victory over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Monday (Sept. 19) evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Uyamadu's tally capitalized on a one-man advantage the 'Dons received after Sergio Cavazos picked up a red card in the 93rd minute for UTRGV.
The 'Dons rallied from deficits of 2-1 and 3-2 to force overtime. Will Hunt, who earned an assist on the game winning goal, tied the game at three in the 81st minute. The goalkeeper came out to challenge Hunt, he shook the keeper, and finished the play with ease.
Fort Wayne was the first on the board in the contest. In the sixth minute Cam Sinclair delivered a long pass across the field from nearly the center stripe that found Jacob Murphy on the right side of the goal. Despite a tough angle, Murphy nailed his shot to put Fort Wayne up 1-0.
However two UTRGV goals followed to put the home squad down 2-1 at the break. Zach Tom tied the game at two on a free kick in the 57th minute. The tie didn't last long, as five minutes later Jaako Hietikko put the Vaqueros up 3-2. However it only set up the Mastodons' dramatic comeback.
Fort Wayne out-shot UTRGV 20-15.
Monday's win was the second dramatic victory over UTRGV in as many years. Last season the 'Dons won in the final minute of regulation at UTRGV.
The 'Dons move to 5-3-0 with the win. UTRGV falls to 2-3-1.
Fort Wayne returns to action on Saturday (Sept. 24) at Denver in the Summit League opener for the 'Dons.
