Softball Earns Comeback Win, Splits Day Two of Showcase

Maria Palmegiani led the 'Dons at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Brooke Imel and Lauren Watson each finished with three hits on the day. Sierra Miranda and Jessica Murray collected a pair of doubles, respectively.
In the night game, Providence went up early with a 2-run double in the bottom of the first. Imel earned her first career RBI with a single up the middle in the second and Balthazor tied it with an RBI single in the third.
The Friars responded in the bottom half of the third with two runs and added another in the fourth. Fort Wayne batted around in the fifth as they score four times in the inning. A Providence error started the scoring before Miranda doubled home a run. Palmegiani added a double of her own, scoring two runs.
The 'Dons added an insurance run in the top of the sixth as Palmegiani singled up the middle to score Jenna Balthazor from third.
Providence loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs and scored a run, but starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel was able to strike out the final batter of the game.
Benefiel picked up her first win of the season throwing a complete game, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits while striking out four.
The first game of the day saw SIUE score two runs in the bottom of the first, including a home run. The Cougars added a run in the fourth, and four more in the fifth, all of which were unearned. SIUE scored its final run in the sixth on a two-out single to end the game.
In the circle, Olivia White took the loss throwing 5 2-3 innings, surrendering eight runs, four earned, on nine hits and two strikeouts.
Fort Wayne wraps up its Spring Break trip tomorrow, March 12, against Saint Joseph's at 11:15 a.m.
