CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Fort Wayne softball team won its final game of the Under Armour Showcase, defeating Saint Joseph's 3-1. SJU had tied the game in the seventh, but the game was called due to a time restriction, with the score reverting back to the last full inning and giving the Mastodons the victory.
Brooke Imel led the 'Dons on the day going 2 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Sierra Miranda and Jenna Balthazor each had a double while Miranda also scored twice.
The Mastodons got things going in the bottom of the second as Miranda reached on an error to start the inning. One out later, Imel singled up the middle and was followed by a SJU error, allowed Miranda to score. Sydney Windlan brought home the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout to the shortstop.
The Hawks only run of the game came on a two-out solo home run in the third. Fort Wayne added an insurance run in the third as Imel singled to right center, scoring Miranda from second.
Bailey Benefiel picked up her second victory of the season on the mound, throwing a complete game. She allowed one run on two hits while striking out two.
Fort Wayne next travels to Miami Ohio for the two-day Miami Invitational March 18 and 19.
