The Mastodons were down 6-3 following the first six innings. Fort Wayne scored a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth to enter the ninth down a run. In the final frame, Jake Weber singled to center and moved all the way to third on an error to start the frame. But the next three 'Dons couldn't knock him in to tie the contest.
Fort Wayne out-hit Western Illinois 12-9. Only one of WIU's hits went for extra bases, but it was a big one, a two-run home run by Drue Galassi in the sixth.
Each of Fort Wayne's nine starters reached base.
Ian Koch (1-1) earned the win for Western Illinois. Sam Cottingham-Beard earned the save. Weber (0-2) received the loss for the 'Dons, throwing five innings.
Fort Wayne falls to 3-13 (0-1 Summit League). Western Illinois improves to 2-13 (1-0 Summit League). The two clubs will play again on Saturday.
