3/18/2017 8:35:00 PM | Baseball
Martin and Western Illinois starter Preston Church each threw six scoreless innings, turning the contest into a battle of the bullpens over the final three innings. The Mastodons would score all the runs they would need in the top of the seventh, notching three runs after loading the bases with no outs. Brady Hettinger, Jake Weber and Brock Logan each had a RBI in the frame.
Martin handed the ball to Damian Helm to start the seventh. Helm allowed just one run in the final three innings to get his first save of the season. Martin earned the win to move his record to 1-2 on the year. Western Illinois reliever J.T. Baksha (0-3) suffered the loss after being chased in the seventh before retiring a single 'Don.
Fort Wayne only out-hit Western Illinois by one hit at 10-9, but earned extra base runners with an 8-2 advantage in walks. The Fort Wayne defense didn't commit a single error on the day.
Jackson Boyce, Logan, Jacob Dickson and Shannon Baker each had two hits for the 'Dons.
Western Illinois falls to 2-14 (1-1 Summit League). Fort Wayne improves to 4-13 (1-1 Summit League). The two clubs will conclude the series on Sunday.
