DeLong's Career Day Leads Softball to Victory
3/19/2017 7:41:00 PM | Softball
DeLong finished the day 4 for 6 at the plate with a double, seven RBIs and three runs scored in addition to her two homers. DeLong tied a career-high with her six RBIs in game one against UDM while going 4 for 4. She becomes the first Fort Wayne player to collect four hits in a game since Larissa Franklin did so at Eastern Michigan on April 29, 2014.
Lauren Watson went 5 for 8 on the day, including three hits against Dayton. Sierra Miranda and Sydney Windlan each had three hits.
The Mastodons jumped on Detroit Mercy early as they batted around in the bottom of the first. Watson and Windlan led off the inning with singles. With two outs, DeLong doubled to left center scoring two runs. Brooke Imel followed with an RBI single before Miranda singled and Maria Palmegiani walked. Jenna Balthazor capped off the inning with a two-run single as the 'Dons scored five times in the inning.
Fort Wayne batted around again in the second as it added to the lead with four more runs. Watson and Windlan once again led off the inning with singles before Kelly Pevely delivered on an RBI single. After a sacrifice bunt, DeLong connected on her second home run of the weekend, and third of the season, a three-run blast to center. The 'Dons loaded the bases but were unable to add to their total.
Starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel kept UDM off the scoreboard until the fifth when the Titans scored four runs. DeLong connected on her second home run of the game, a solo blast to center, in the sixth to cap the scoring for the Mastodons. With her second home run, DeLong became the first Mastodon with two in a game since Alex Bousquet hit two at IUPUI on May 3, 2014. UDM added a run in the seventh on a solo home run, but Benefiel escaped a bases loaded jam without allowing another run to cement the victory.
Benefiel pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs while striking out three.
In game two, Dayton took the lead with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. The 'Dons came back in the sixth to tie it with two of their own. Imel led off the inning by being hit and Jessica Murray followed with a single. DeLong brought home Imel on a sacrifice fly to right. Fort Wayne added another run on an errant throw when Miranda tried to steal second, allowing pinch runner Courtney Holm to score from third.
Dayton scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a Mastodon error after a sacrifice bunt.
Elizabeth Snodgrass suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run in six innings of work. She scattered seven hits and walked none.
Fort Wayne hosts its home opener against Toledo for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 22, at 2:30 p.m.
