Softball Unable to Overcome Tough Day at the Plate

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Fort Wayne softball team had a tough time getting its bats going during day two of the Under Armour Invitational as the Mastodons fell to Penn 5-0 and St. Bonaventure 1-0.
In the first game of the day, Penn took an early lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly. The Quakers tacked on three more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. The lone baserunner for the 'Dons in the game come on a two-out single by Sierra Miranda in the third inning.
In the circle, Bailey Benefiel went five innings and struck out a season-high five batters in a losing effort. She allowed four runs on five hits. Elizabeth Snodgrass came on for the final two innings in relief, surrendering one run on three hits and striking out two.
The lone run of game two came in the bottom of the first inning after the Bonnies scored on a Fort Wayne throwing error. The Mastodons put runners on base in the second, fourth and sixth innings but were unable to move a runner past second.
Kelly Pevely earned Fort Wayne's first hit of the game with an infield single in the fourth. Sydney Windlan had the Mastodon's other hit as she doubled to right center with two outs in the sixth.
Olivia White pitched a complete game on the rubber for the 'Dons, allowing an unearned run on five hits with a strikeout.
Fort Wayne closes out the Under Armour Invitational against Hartford at 11:15 a.m. followed by Western Michigan at 1:45 p.m.
