All nine Fort Wayne starters collected at least one hit and an RBI on the day, while seven players had multiple hits. Sierra Miranda led the Mastodons going 3 for 5 at the plate with four RBIs, two runs, a triple and a double. Lauren Watson led the team with four hits on the day. Caitlyn DeLong finished 3 for 6, including a home run, with three RBIs and three runs scored. Maria Palmegiani also collected three hits. Amber Davis, Kelly Pevely and Sydney Windlan each had a pair of hits.
In the first game against Hartford, the Mastodons had season-highs in runs, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases and stolen bases. The 'Dons got things rolling against the Hawks by scoring a run in the first, three in the second, four in the third and four more in the fourth. Back-to-back singles and a stolen base in the first by Windlan and Pevely allowed Davis to bring home Windlan on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
In the second, Miranda roped a triple to the left-center gap, scoring Palmegiani and pinch runner Brooke Imel. One out later, Watson reached on an infield single, allowing Miranda to score.
Mastodon starting pitcher Olivia White escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the second without allowing a run. The 'Dons responded with four runs in the top of the third. Palmegiani had an RBI double, Jessica Murray followed with an RBI triple, and DeLong capped it off with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to center.
Hartford got on the board in the third with two runs, but Fort Wayne quickly answered with another four-run inning. DeLong brought home a run on an infield single with the bases loaded. Miranda added a two-run double to left before Jenna Balthazor brought home the final run on a sacrifice fly to center. The Hawks added another run in the fourth but the 'Dons prevented further damage by turning a double play to end the game.
White picked up her second win of the season in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
Fort Wayne scored first in the afternoon game as Watson led off with a single. One out later, Watson scored when Pevely's chopper in front of the plate was mishandled by the Broncos. WMU came back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs, including a three-run home run. Western Michigan scored six more times in the bottom of the second to lengthen its lead.
The Mastodons extended the game in the fifth by scoring a pair of runs. With one out, Miranda walked and Balthazor was hit by a pitch. Back-to-back singles from Watson and Windlan brought home a run. A WMU error off the bat of Pevely allowed the final run to score. The 'Dons put runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to score another run.
On the rubber, Elizabeth Snodgrass took the loss after throwing 1 2-3 innings and allowing 10 runs. Bailey Benefiel came on for the final 4 1-3, allowing only one hit while striking out five batters.
Fort Wayne returns to action while in Florida when it takes on Butler at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8.
