Murray Perfect at the Dish but Softball Drops Midweek Contest

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Jessica Murray was a perfect 3 for 3 at the dish but the Fort Wayne softball team dropped a midweek game to Butler 5-1.
The Mastodons out-hit the Bulldogs 7-6, with Murray leading the way. Lauren Watson finished with a pair of hits while Sydney Windlan and Sierra Miranda each had one. Windlan drove in Fort Wayne's only run.
Butler took the lead in the first as the leadoff batter reached on a Mastodon error. The next batter put down a bunt as the Bulldog runner on third scored. Both pitchers knuckled down over the next five innings, as neither team was able to score.
The Mastodon's best opportunity early in the game came in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases, but a diving play by Butler turned into a double play to end the inning.
The Bulldogs added four runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead. The 'Dons fought back in their final at-bat as Miranda and Watson reached on singles. Windlan then delivered an RBI single to right center, scoring the lone Fort Wayne run. With the tying run on deck, the Mastodons were unable to get another runner on as the final two outs were recorded.
Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss, throwing six innings of work and allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out five. Olivia White came on to close the door in the seventh, allowing just one hit in an inning of work.
Fort Wayne returns to action on March 10, as it kicks off the Under Armour Showcase against Central Michigan at 4:30 p.m. and Army at 6:45 p.m.
