CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Fort Wayne softball dropped a pair of close games as it opened the Under Armour Showcase, falling to Central Michigan 2-1 and Army West Point 13-8.
Three different Mastodons collected three hits on the day led by Maria Palmegiani's 3 for 4 and 3 RBI performance against Army. Sydney Windlan and Jessica Murray each had three hits on the day while Murray also collected 3 RBIs. Lauren Watson and Jenna Balthazor each finished with two runs scored.
In the opener against CMU, both pitchers were tough in the early going. The Chippewa struck first with a run in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. The Mastodons responded in the next half inning as Murray doubled home Windlan with two outs. Central Michigan added the final run in the bottom of the fifth on a double steal. The 'Dons put the tying run on in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to bring it home.
Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss in the circle despite allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out three.
Game two had both teams scoring early and often. Army scored seven runs in the top of the second to go out in front. Fort Wayne answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Windlan brought home a run on a sacrifice fly. Kelly Pevely followed with an RBI single up the middle.
The 'Dons added a run in the fourth on an RBI single by Palmegiani before Army responded back with two of its own in the fifth. The Mastodons hit back in their half of the fifth with four more runs. Murray brought home a run on a single through the right side and Sierra Miranda added an RBI infield single. Fort Wayne capped off the inning with a two-run single up the middle by Palmegiani.
The Mastodons pulled within one as they scored a run on an RBI fielder's choice from Murray in the sixth. The Black Knights tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead for good.
Olivia White took the loss, throwing 5 1-3 innings, allowing nine runs, two earned, on seven hits and seven strikeouts. Elizabeth Snodgrass came on for 1 1-3 innings, giving up three runs on three hits. Darby Shaw pitched the final 1-3 inning, surrendering one run on three hits.
