Jessica Murray led the 'Dons on the day going 4 for 7 with four RBIs, three runs, a triple and a home run. She finished game one a double shy of the cycle. Sydney Windlan ended the day 3 for 7 with three RBIs, two runs and a triple. Sierra Miranda also finished with three hits. Brooke Imel, Jenna Balthazor, Caitlyn DeLong and Lauren Watson all had two hits for the day. Balthazor and DeLong also added a double and drove in two runs, respectively.
Game one saw the Mastodons take the lead in the top of the first. Watson led off the game with a single and one out later Murray delivered a triple down the right field line. Murray then scored when SDSU made an error off the bat of Maria Palmegiani. The Jackrabbits responded in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs, all with two outs.
The 'Dons came right back in the top of the third with a five-run inning as they batted around. Watson and Miranda led off with singles before Murray stepped in and delivered a three-run blast to center for her second home run of the season. One out later and with two runners on, DeLong doubled to left field, scoring Windlan and pinch runner Courtney Holm. SDSU got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Mastodon error and a sacrifice fly.
South Dakota State scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead 8-7. It would be short lived as Fort Wayne took the lead for good in the fifth. Imel led off with a single and Windlan followed with an RBI triple. After a walk to Taylor Bolyard, Balthazor brought them both home on a double. The 'Dons tacked on two more runs in the sixth on an RBI double from Imel and an RBI single by Windlan.
Darby Shaw threw a complete game to earn the victory, allowing eight runs, four earned, on six hits while she struck out three.
SDSU went up early in game two on a double steal in the bottom of the second. Fort Wayne tied the game in the top of the sixth as Palmegiani was hit by a pitch with one out. After a sacrifice bunt, Holm scored on a single to center by Windlan. The Jackrabbits got a two-run home run in the bottom half of the sixth for what was the game-winner. In the top of the seventh, the Mastodons put the tying run on after singles by DeLong and Balthazor, but were unable to bring the run home.
In the circle, Bailey Benefiel took the loss, throwing a complete game while giving up three runs on eight hits and three strikeouts.
The two teams conclude their weekend series tomorrow, April 16, at noon ET.
