OMAHA, Neb. – The best Summit League women's cross country student-athlete all year was at her best on the most important day of the season on Saturday (Oct. 27). Purdue Fort Wayne's Emma Rafuse cruised to the 2018 Summit League Championship with a time of 20:32.92. It set a new school record for a 6K and broke the Summit League Championship record.
She finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of second place Kelby Anderson (North Dakota State, 20:41.46). Rafuse also defeated third place Rachel King (South Dakota State, 21:04.55) who last year edged Rafuse for first place.
Rafuse's 20:32.92 broke a 12-year old record for a 6K league event, taking down Diana Chelimo's (Oral Roberts) time of 20:41.54 from 2006.
Rafuse's time on Saturday is the ninth best 6K time in league history in any race, not just a league championship event.
She is the first Mastodon to win the women's title since Crystina Martinez in 2008. Like Martinez, Rafuse was named the Championship MVP and All-Summit League First Team following Saturday's race.
As a team the Mastodons took fifth with a score of 146 points. It is the same spot the 'Dons finished last season, however this year they defeated an additional team as North Dakota joined the league this year to make for an eight-team race.
Rebecca Sippel was 27th with a time of 22:44.80. In 35th was Hannah Aschliman (23:14.74). Sophia Hirzel took 48th (24:36.16). Caitlyn Kiekhaefer was 54th (25:18.39) with Bailie Brown (25:45.87) two spots behind. Emily Fuelling (27:08.09) took 62nd.
South Dakota won the team title (51 points), defeating North Dakota State (52 points). Omaha hosted the event at the Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Club.
The 'Dons are back in action on Nov. 8 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals.
