11/9/2018 2:05:00 PM | Women's Cross Country
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne's Emma Rafuse finished seventh at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 9) with a time of 20:43.5. Her performance earned her one of the four individual spots from the region to advance to nationals.
In the final kilometer, Rafuse passed Indiana's Margaret Allen to grab the seventh spot in the 6K race.
She is the first Mastodon to advance to cross country NCAA nationals since Crystal Martinez in 2008. Martinez finished eighth at the 2008 regionals, making Rafuse's seventh place performance on Friday the best in school history at a regional event. Martinez and Rafuse are the only two individuals to ever qualify for cross country nationals in program history.
Rafuse will travel to her home state of Wisconsin for the national meet on Nov. 17 in Madison at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course.
As a team, the Mastodons took 26th with 742 points, one spot better than last season and their best finish in the last three seasons.
Hannah Aschliman was 161st, stopping the clock in 23:19.5. Rebecca Sippel took 188th, running a time of 23:58.9. Right behind Sippel in 189th was Sophia Hirzel (24:07.6). Bailie Brown earned 197th with a personal best of 24:41.0 to round out Purdue Fort Wayne's top five.
Caitlyn Kiekhaefer was 208th (25:17.5) and Emily Fuelling was 222nd (26:56.7).
