Mastodons Combine for Two Hit Shutout Over Raiders
2/11/2018 5:10:00 PM | Softball
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Shaina Eyre and Bailey Benefiel combined to throw a two-hit shutout for the Fort Wayne softball team, as the Mastodons defeated Wright State 2-0 on the final day of the Total Control Sports Invitational.
Eyre earned her first collegiate victory after starting in the circle for the 'Dons and throwing four innings of one-hit ball, striking out three. Benefiel came on to pitch the final three innings and earned the save, as she also allowed just one hit and punching out five batters.
Offensively, Lacey Wilzbacher led the team going 2-for-3 on the day with a stolen base. Amber Davis and Morganne Denny each went 1-for-2, with Davis collecting an RBI.
The Mastodons scored the only run they needed in the bottom of the second with two outs. Brooke Imel drew a walk before Wilzbacher reached on an infield single, as an error on the play moved Imel to third. A double steal brought Imel home, and gave the 'Dons a 1-0 lead.
Fort Wayne tacked on a run in the third, again coming with two outs. The first two batter of the inning were retired before Denny singled to center. After a Raider error, Davis singled down the third base line, scoring Denny from second.
Wright State put a runner on base in five of the seven innings, but each time the dynamic pitching duo was able to escape damage and keep the Raiders off the board. WSU loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but Eyre struck out Rebekah Lenos looking to end the threat. Wright State put the tying run on base in the seventh, this time Benefiel was able to induce a groundball to end the game.
Fort Wayne travels to Montgomery, Alabama next for the Black & Gold Tournament hosted by Alabama State, February 16-18.
