2/16/2018 11:16:00 PM | Softball
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Reigning Summit League Pitcher of the Week Bailey Benefiel threw a 1-hit shutout to lead the Fort Wayne softball team in a 1-0 win over Nicholls State during the opening day of the Black & Gold Tournament. The Mastodons split the day as they fell to Middle Tennessee 9-2 in the nightcap.
Maria Palmegiani led the 'Dons at the dish, going 3-for-7 on the day with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Payton Hollis, Lacey Wilzbacher and Lauren Watson each collected two hits.
In the first game of the day, the Mastodons and Colonels were locked in a pitcher's duel. Benefiel surrendered the lone Nicholls State hit in the second inning on a bunt. Fort Wayne got a one-out double from Hollis in the first and a one-out single from Palmegiani in the seventh.
With neither team able to push a run across, the international tiebreaker rule was applied in the eighth inning. Stephanie Hanic was put on second base, and after Wilzbacher moved her to third, Jenna Balthazor delivered a line drive single to left to bring home the only run of the game. Benefiel didn't allow the Colonels runner past second base as she retired all three batters in the eighth.
Benefiel earned her second victory of the season, surrendering one walk while striking out four in the eight-inning complete game shutout.
The Mastodons jumped out in front early in game two, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Palmegiani doubled down the right field line, scoring Watson from first. Hanic followed with a single through the left side, scoring Palmegiani. The Mastodons followed with singles from Wilzbacher and Lexi Smalarz, but Hanic was thrown out trying to score, ending the inning.
Middle Tennessee scored a run in the second, three in the third and fourth, and two more in the fifth. Fort Wayne loaded the bases in the sixth on a pair of singles from Wilzbacher and Amber Davis, and a hit batter, but the 'Dons were unable to push across a run.
Addie Benham took the loss in the circle, throwing 2 2-3 innings and allowing four runs on six hits. Shaina Eyre came on for the final 4 1-3 innings, surrendering five runs on 10 hits.
Fort Wayne returns to action for day two of the Black & Gold Tournament tomorrow, February 17, to take on UT Martin at 11 a.m. ET and host Alabama State at 3:30 p.m. ET.
