Mastodons Win in Extra Innings, Split Day Two in Alabama
2/17/2018 10:38:00 PM | Softball
MONGTGOMERY, Ala. - The Fort Wayne softball team earned a split on day two of the Black & Gold Tournament, as the Mastodons won in extra innings 5-3 over UT Martin, before falling to host Alabama State 9-4.
Every starter for the 'Dons collected at least one hit on the day. Stephanie Hanic led the way going 3-for-7 with two RBIs. Amber Davis, Lauren Watson, Morganne Denny, Payton Hollis and Maria Palmegiani all collected two hits on the day. Denny and Lacey Wilzbacher each knocked in a pair of runs. Watson led the team with three runs scored, while Hollis and Brooke Imel each scored twice.
The first game of the day began as a pitcher's duel, as neither starter allowed a run until the sixth inning. The Mastodons were held without a hit until the fifth inning, and Fort Wayne starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel limited the Skyhawks to three hits through five.
The 'Dons broke through in the top of the sixth. After back-to-back leadoff bunt singles, Denny singled to right, scoring Imel and Hollis. UT Martin answered back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a Mastodon error.
After neither team scored in the seventh, the International Tiebreaker was used. Fort Wayne jumped out quickly, scoring on a UTM error on the first pitch of the eighth. After another error and a sacrifice bunt, Hollis scored on a Palmegiani RBI groundout. The Mastodons added another run when Hanic singled to left. The Skyhawks scored a run in the bottom half on a single. Benefiel was able to escape a no-out bases loaded jam, thanks to a diving catch from Hollis in left, confusion on UT Martin's part on a groundball, and a strikeout to end the game.
Benefiel finished the complete game allowing three runs, zero earned, on three hits and a career-high nine strikeouts.
The nightcap saw the Mastodons fall behind early as Alabama State scored five runs in the bottom of the first, on only one hit. Fort Wayne got on the board in the third. After a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, Hanic delivered a sacrifice fly to right field. Davis followed with an RBI single back up the middle to score Denny.
The Hornets added to their lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The 'Dons tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, as they loaded the bases. With two outs, Wilzbacher delivered a two-run single to left center, but the rally would end there as the final out was recorded.
Shaina Eyre took the loss, throwing five innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on three hits. Demitra Burns came on for the final inning, surrendering four runs, three earned, on four hits.
Fort Wayne wraps up the Black & Gold Tournament tomorrow, February 18, when it takes on Akron at 10:30 am ET.
