Mastodons Take Opener At Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Fort Wayne never trailed in a 3-2 win at Little Rock on Friday (Feb. 23) evening. The Mastodons scored a run in the first inning and never looked back in the non-conference baseball victory.
Brandon Phelps (1-0) started on the mound and went five innings plus innings. He allowed just a single run in the sixth inning. He gave way to his brother Chase Phelps, who threw the final four innings to get his first career save.
The Mastodons got on the board in the first when Brady Hettinger came around on a wild pitch. Robert Young III homered on a 1-0 pitch in the fifth inning to put the 'Dons up 2-0.
It was a 2-1 game in the seventh when the 'Dons added a needed insurance run on an RBI single by Shannon Baker.
Down 3-2, Little Rock put a runner on in the ninth inning. However Dylan Wilbert threw him out trying to steal second with one out. It was one of two runners Wilbert threw out on the evening.
Carter Brown started for Little Rock and was handed the loss after six innings of work. He is 0-1.
Little Rock falls to 2-3. Fort Wayne improves to 2-2. The two clubs will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
