Mastodons Defeat Vikings, Fall to Bruins

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Fort Wayne softball team split its second day at the Belmont/TSU Winter Warmup, as the Mastodons defeated Cleveland State 3-1, before falling to Belmont 4-1.
Maria Palmegiani led the 'Dons at the dish going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Five different Mastodons recorded a hit on the day. Lauren Watson led the team with two runs scored.
In game one against Cleveland State, the Mastodons got on the scoreboard first as they pushed a run across in the bottom of the second. Palmegiani led off with a single down the right field line. After a walk, pinch runner Courtney Holm scored when Lacey Wilzbacher's bunt was overthrown by the Viking pitcher.
Both teams plated a run in the third as CSU scored their only one after a single and a double to start the inning. The Mastodons got the run back after a Viking error, a single by Stephanie Hanic and another error allowed Watson to score. The 'Dons added an insurance run in the fourth after a double from Sydney Windlan and a single up the middle by Payton Hollis.
Bailey Benefiel improved her record to 5-1 on the season, throwing a complete game. She allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out seven.
The second game of the day saw Belmont score all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first, driving in a run on a bases loaded single, and another on a bases loaded hit batter. The Bruins added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead.
The Mastodons scored their only run in the top of the sixth. Watson reached on an error, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout. She then scored on a Palmegiani single up the middle.
Addie Benham took the loss after tossing a complete game, dropping her record to 0-3 on the season. Benham allowed four runs on six hits, and struck out two.
Fort Wayne wraps up the Belmont/TSU Winter Warmup when the Mastodons face North Dakota tomorrow, February 25 at 11 a.m. ET, followed by a rematch with Belmont at 1:15 p.m. ET.
