Lacey Wilzbacher led the 'Dons going 3-for-5 at the dish including a double and a three-run home run. She also led the team with three RBIs and three runs scored. Morganne Denny collected a pair of hits while driving in a run, and scoring another. Maria Palmegiani finished with three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Sydney Windlan also scored two runs.
Fort Wayne got things started in the top of the first when Wilzbacher led off the game with a double. Denny brought her home on an RBI single, and Palmegiani followed with her first home run of the season to straight away center.
After the Broncos got a run back in the bottom of the first, the Mastodons responded with another three-run inning in the second. After a walk to Windlan and a single from Wilzbacher, Payton Hollis doubled to score both. After a WMU error, Palmegiani brought home Hollis on a fielder's choice.
Western Michigan wouldn't go away as it got a solo home run and an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Once again Fort Wayne punched back in the top of the third. An error and a single by Windlan put two on for Wilzbacher. On the fifth pitch of her at-bat, the junior delivered on her first career home run as Mastodon, depositing the ball over the left field wall.
WMU scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be all it would get as Shaina Eyre came in to slam the door shut on the Broncos.
Bailey Benefiel picked up her seventh win of the season, pitching four innings of relief and allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out five. Eyre came on for the final 1 1-3 innings, retiring all four batters she faced for her first career save. Addie Benham started in the circle for the Mastodons, throwing 1 2-3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a strikeout in the no-decision.
Fort Wayne returns to the diamond for the Miami University Invitational March 16-18.
