3/16/2018 8:00:00 PM | Softball
Lauren Watson led the Mastodons on the day going 5-for-7, including a perfect 4-for-4 against Miami, with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Lacey Wilzbacher finished 3-for-7 with a home run, a double and two runs scored. Maria Palmegiani went 3-for-6, while Courtney Holm collected a pair of hits.
The first game of the day began as a pitcher's duel with both starters combining for eight strikeouts in the first two innings. The bats came alive for both squads in the third as Dayton scored two runs.
The Mastodons answered in the bottom of the half of the third with four runs. Back-to-back doubles by Holm and Payton Hollis began the inning, with Holm scoring on Hollis'. One out later, Wilzbacher singled up the middle and Watson followed with an RBI double of her own. Morganne Denny then brought home a run on a sacrifice fly. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single by Palmegiani.
The Flyers added two runs in the fourth to tie the game. In the seventh, UD pulled ahead for good with five runs in the frame.
In the circle, Bailey Benefiel suffered the complete game loss, dropping her record to 7-5 on the season. She allowed seven earned runs on six hits, while striking out a season-high nine batters.
Miami jumped out to the early lead in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second.
The Mastodons punched back in the fourth. Watson led off the inning with a single down the left field line, and Denny followed with a double to right. Palmegiani flew out to the right fielder, but the throw missed the cutoff, allowing Watson to score from third. Denny would then score on an RBI groundout by Stephanie Hanic.
The RedHawks added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. With one out in the seventh, Fort Wayne got a solo home run from Wilzbacher, her second of the season. The final Mastodon run came on a Palmegiani sacrifice fly to center that scored Watson.
Shaina Eyre took the loss in five innings of work on the mound, allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts. Addie Benham came on for the final inning, allowing two runs on two hits and two strikeouts.
Fort Wayne returns to action tomorrow, March 17, for two games at the Miami Invitational. The Mastodons will face Robert Morris at 1:30 p.m., followed by a rematch with the RedHawks at 6:30 p.m.
