Mastodons Sweep Robert Morris and Miami

Lacey Wilzbacher led the Mastodons at the plate, going 4-for-7 on the day with two doubles and three runs scored. Lexi Smalarz and Morganne Denny each went 3-for-6. Denny led the team with five RBIs and three runs scored, while Smalarz finished with three RBIs and two runs. Maria Palmegiani collected a pair of hits, a home run and a double, with three RBIs.
Fort Wayne jumped on the Colonials early, batting around and scoring six runs in the top of the first. Wilzbacher led off the game with a double, and after a walk to Lauren Watson, Denny brought them both home on a double to right center. After a two out walk, Courtney Holm scored Denny on a single to left center. An error by the RMU left fielder allowed Holm and Jenna Balthazor to score. The final run came on an RBI single from Smalarz.
The Mastodons added a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Demitra Burns that brought home Denny. The 'Dons put the run rule into effect in the fifth. A pair of errors by the Colonials opened the inning. After a walk to Holm, Smalarz singled to left field, scoring Holm and Balthazor. Wilzbacher capped things off with an RBI double to left field. The lone Robert Morris run came in the bottom of the fifth on a triple and sacrifice fly.
Bailey Benefiel pitched a complete game, improving her record to 8-5 on the season. She allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out six Colonial batters.
In the rematch with Miami, the RedHawks scored two runs in the top of the first. The Mastodons got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double by Palmegiani.
The two teams matched each other in the third, scoring three runs each. In Fort Wayne's half of the inning, Wilzbacher led off with a single to left, and scored on a single by Denny. After a pitching change by Miami, Palmegiani promptly greeted the new pitcher by depositing her second pitch over the left field wall for her second home run of the season.
The 'Dons completed the comeback in the fourth. With one out, Smalarz got the rally started with a single up the middle. After a two-out walk to Watson, Denny doubled to left center, scoring both runners and give the Mastodons the lead.
Starting pitcher Shaina Eyre shut down the RedHawks over the final three innings, allowing only one base runner. Eyre picked up her third win of the season, throwing the complete game, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out four.
Fort Wayne closes out the Miami Invitational tomorrow, March 18, against No. 19 Michigan at 12:30 p.m.
