OXFORD, Ohio - The Fort Wayne softball team hung with Michigan, the 19th ranked team in the country, early on but the Mastodons were unable to pull off the upset, falling to the Wolverines 7-0.
Lauren Watson led the 'Dons going 2-for-3 at the plate. Maria Palmegiani and Jenna Balthazor also had hits for the Mastodons.
The Mastodons best chance for a run came in the top of the first as they loaded the bases. A pair of singles by Watson and Palmegiani was followed by a walk to Demitra Burns to load the bases. But, with two outs, a groundball ended the inning. The Wolverines scored two runs in the bottom of the first coming on a couple of hits and two Mastodon errors.
Fort Wayne had another chance in the fourth, putting two runners on, as Burns was hit and Balthazor singled to left field. UM got a three-run home run in the fourth and a solo shot in the fifth. They added a run in the sixth on a bases loaded walk.
The 'Dons got a two-out walk from Amber Davis in the seventh, but that would be only runner to each for them in the frame.
Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss, throwing six innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits and striking out five. Shaina Eyre came on to pitch the final inning, allowing one run on two hits.
Fort Wayne has the week off and returns to action for a doubleheader at Bowling Green on March 28.
