JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - An early lead was unable to hold up for the Fort Wayne softball team, as the Mastodons dropped a midweek contest at Jacksonville State 4-2.
Jenna Balthazor led the Mastodons going 2-for-3 at the plate and driving in two runs. Stephanie Hanic and Brooke Imel each collected a hit for the 'Dons.
Fort Wayne scored both of its runs in the top of the second. Maria Palmegiani earned a leadoff walk, and two outs later Courtney Holm also walked. After a wild pitch, Balthazor delivered a single to right, scoring Holm and pinch runner Sydney Windlan.
Jacksonville State scored two runs in the bottom of the third, both coming with two outs, to tie the game. The Gamecocks scored a two-out run in both the fourth and sixth innings to take the lead for good.
Starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel had a no decision after throwing 2 2-3 innings, and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three. Addie Benham suffered the loss, allowing one run on four hits in 2 1-3 innings. Shaina Eyre came on for the final inning, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two Gamecocks.
Fort Wayne returns to action for the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament, hosted by Kennesaw State March 9-11.
