Mastodons Drop Summit League Opener

MACOMB, Ill. - The Fort Wayne softball team dropped its Summit League opening doubleheader at Western Illinois 5-0 and 10-9.
Lacey Wilzbacher led the Mastodons on the day going 4-for-7 with a double and three RBIs. Lauren Watson finished with three hits and an RBI. Stephanie Hanic went for two hits in game two, including a triple, to go along with an RBI. Brooke Imel also finished with two hits on the day.
In game one, the Leathernecks scored two runs in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded. WIU added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss in the circle, throwing a complete game, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits. She also struck out three batters.
The second game saw WIU jump out to the early lead again with two run in the bottom of the first. The Mastodons exploded in the second with seven runs on five hits. With the bases loaded, Jenna Balthazor was hit and Watson followed with an RBI single. An RBI single from Wilzbacher was followed by another hit batter, this time Morganne Denny. Maria Palmegiani drew a bases loaded walk to chase the Leatherneck starting pitcher. A sacrifice fly by Demitra Burns brought home a run and the 'Dons capped off the inning with an RBI single by Hanic.
The Leathernecks responded in the bottom half of the second with five runs, tying the game. Fort Wayne broke the tie in the fifth with a two-run single by Wilzbacher. Again, Western Illinois answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double, pulling the score to 9-8.
WIU would win the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out, two-run double.
Shaina Eyre had a no decision for the Mastodons as the starter. She threw four innings and allowed eight runs, two earned, on nine hits while striking out three. Addie Benham suffered the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 2 2-3 innings of work.
The two teams close out their Summit League series tomorrow, April 8, at noon ET.
