Young’s Heroics Not Enough For Mastodons In Loss To SDSU

Fort Wayne had to rally in the contest after falling behind 5-0 in the first inning. It started the comeback with a three spot in the fourth. Travis Upp had an RBI single in the inning before Dylan Wilbert knocked in two with a single. It made the score 5-3. SDSU responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth before Jacob Dickson hit his second solo home run in as many days for the 'Dons in the top of the fifth.
Down 9-5 in the ninth, Fort Wayne Garrett Mohler singled with an out. Mike Snyder walked before Dickson struck out for the second out. Shannon Baker extended the game on a single to left. Young then came to the plate and on a 1-2 count deposited the ball over the left field wall to knot the game at nine.
SDSU opened the bottom of the ninth with a single. Eventually the bases were loaded for Phil Velez with two outs. Velez ended the game with a grand slam to left. It was Velez' second home run of the game.
Baker finished with three hits and three runs scored. He is now hitting .373. Mohler and Brock Logan both had two hits.
Duane Miller took the loss for the Mastodons. He is 0-1. Korey Kuhlmann retired one batter, but earned the win for SDSU. He is 1-3.
SDSU improves to 7-19 (5-5 Summit League). Fort Wayne falls to 6-20 (2-10 Summit League). The 'Dons host Butler on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. start.
