Maria Palmegiani led the 'Dons going 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Morganne Denny finished with two hits. Stephanie Hanic led the Mastodons with three RBIs. Brooke Imel reached based in all four of her at-bats.
Palmegiani led off the second inning with a solo home run to left center, her sixth of the season. The Leathernecks answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second and added another run in the third.
Fort Wayne took the lead for good in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Courtney Holm singled through the left side to score a run. Hanic followed with a bases clearing double to right field. WIU added a run in the bottom of the fifth, but that would be its final tally.
The Mastodons added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Lauren Watson drove in Hanic on a single to left center. Demitra Burns followed by adding an RBI single of her own. Palmegiani capped off the scoring with a double to left field.
Bailey Benefiel earned her 12th victory of the season, tossing a complete game in the circle. She allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out four batters.
The win was the Mastodon's first at the Summit League Championship since 2014.
Fort Wayne now advances to the double-elimination portion of the tournament as they face No. 2 seed South Dakota State tomorrow, May 10, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
