Mastodons Dominate Opening Day of Golden Flashes Classic

KENT, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dominated the opening day of the Golden Flashes Classic, sweeping both of its matches. The Mastodons defeated Morgan State 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-19) and host Kent state 3-0 (25-10, 25-6, 25-16).
The Mastodon offense was running on all cylinders the entire day, as they hit season-highs against both Morgan State (.349) and then Kent State (.351).
In the first match of the day, Nicole Rightnowar led all players with 14 kills and adding eight digs. Elizabeth Fuerst added eight kills while Sydney Boerst had seven. Madison Jaqua had a match-high 31 assists and Elizabeth Britner led the team with nine digs.
Although the Mastodons dropped the first point of the opening set, the 'Dons went on a run that saw them take a commanding 12-point lead, as they cruised to the opening set victory. Morgan State again scored the first point of the second set, but the Mastodons used a 4-0 run to take the lead. Later, trailing by two, the Mastodons rallied with a 7-1 advantage to take set number two. The 'Dons never trailed in the third set, scoring the first point and later extending their lead on a 5-1 run.
It was all Mastodons in the nightcap as the 'Dons began the match by scoring eight straight points as they took the first set 25-10. The Mastodons continued their dominance in the second, as they used a pair of 6-0 runs to hold the Golden Flashes to six points in the set. It was the fewest points allowed by the Mastodons in a set since defeating Ball State 25-7 in the first set of their match back on Sept. 4, 2013. The Mastodons hit a season-high .636 during the set, finishing with 14 kills and zero errors on 22 attempts. The 'Dons scored the first five points of the third set, as once again it was all Mastodons to earn the sweep.
Purdue Fort Wayne held Kent State to a -.056 hitting percentage in the match, the lowest since holding South Dakota to a -.013 on Sept. 28. 2014.
Rightnowar again led the Mastodons with a match-high 15 kills to go along with nine digs and three blocks. Fuerst finished the night hitting .545 with 12 kills and zero errors. Boerst added seven kills, a match-high five blocks, two solo, while hitting .500. Katie Crowe had a match-high 15 digs as Britner had eight. Jaqua led all played with 31 assists.
