Cross Country Takes on Final Summit League Championship

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne cross country will head out to Fargo, N.D. for the program's final Summit League Cross Country Championship on Saturday (Nov. 2). The Mastodons will compete in the 8K race for the men's and the 6K race for the women's. North Dakota State will be hosting this year's championship at Rose Creek Golf Course.

Men's Preview (8K)
The men's cross country program took home third place at the University of Evansville Invitational 8K on October 19. Draven Thompson led the way for the Mastodons, finishing 12th with a time of 26:18.2. Seven runners finished the race with a career best time and five runners finished in the top 25. Thompson holds the best time in the 8K for the 2019 season and finished with a time of 26:09.3 at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Sept. 28. Last year the 'Dons finished fourth with 99 points. Robert Peck finished in 21st with a time of 26:44.78, Alex Barton took 25th (26:52.17). Sammy Moran earned 29 thanks to a finish of 27:05.67 and Austin Rockstroh (28:32.63) was 46th.
Women's Preview (6K)
The women's cross country program finished fourth at the University of Evansville Invitational 5K on October 19 where three freshman Mastodons recorded PR's and three finished in the top 15. Makaila Groves, Kenzie Smith and Lauren Morales all had career bests at Evansville and Kathy Potter (10th), Groves (12th), and Sophia Hirzel (14th) finished in the top 15. Potter holds the best time in a 5K this season with a time of 19:00.2 and she accomplished that time at the Joe Piane Invitational at Notre Dame on October 4. The Summit League Championship will be the Mastodons first time competing in a 6K this season. Last year at the Summit League, the Mastodons finished fifth with 146 points. Hirzel came in 48th with a time of 24:36.16.

On Friday, November 15, the 'Dons will compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The women's cross country team will compete in the 6K event at 12:30 p.m. and the men's will compete in a 10K at 1:30 p.m. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis.
