FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The women's track and field program ended the Mastodon Opener on Saturday (Dec. 7) with a new school record and a fifth-place finish at the Lutheran Health Fieldhouse.
Freshman high jumper Naimah Slaughter finished her first collegiate track and field meet by setting a new school record with a mark of 1.68m and placed first.
Kathy Potter sped her way into first place in the 5000m run with a time of 18:44.18, four seconds faster than anyone else at the meet.
Ally Bailey and Savannah Girolami both finished in the top 10 for the 300m dash. Bailey finished in second place (40.47) and Girolami ended in seventh place (41.83).
The Mastodons ended the day with a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay. Katie Clark, Girolami, Bailey and Rachel Pierre-Louis ran a time of 4:01.96
Ball State took first place as a team with a score of 166 points.
"As a staff we could not be more proud of this track and field team. This was more than just a track meet to us. This competition was the culmination of countless hours of work by campus administration, athletics personnel, and the great student-athletes that choose to call Purdue Fort Wayne home. Today was simply the first step in building a championship program and we are excited to take many more this season," says Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Alex Carradine.
Up next for Purdue Fort Wayne will be the Strive for Greatness Invitational Presented by Circle Logistics next Saturday (Dec. 14) at Indiana Tech.
