Mastodons Break Out the Bats in Win Over UNA, Split the Day

Abby Baez led the Mastodons on the day going 3-for-6 at the plate. Lauren Watson, Alise Hale, Brooke Imel and Lexi Smalarz all collected a pair of hits on the day. Watson, Imel and Lacey Wilzbacher each scored a pair of runs. Hale and Morganne Denny drove in a pair of runs.
In the first game of the day, the 'Dons fell behind early as the Skyhawks scored two runs in the first, three in the second and four in the third. The Mastodons pushed across their lone run of the game in the fifth inning. After a walk to Imel and a UTM error, a single by Smalarz loaded the bases. Ashley Haas delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Imel from third.
Alyssa Malicki took the loss in the circle in three innings of work. Shaina Eyre was nearly perfect in the circle in two innings of relief, allowing zero hits while striking out two.
The afternoon game saw North Alabama jump out in front with two runs in the top of the first. The Mastodons came back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own. The 'Dons pushed across runs on an RBI single from Denny and a suicide squeeze bunt from Hale.
Purdue Fort Wayne busted out the bats in the second inning as the 'Dons batted around while scoring six runs on six hits. The Mastodons got runs on RBI hits from Watson, Baez, Hale, and Sydney Windlan. The Mastodons also scored a pair of runs on a UNA error.
The Lions would close the gap in the fifth, scoring four runs with two outs in the inning.
Lauren McConnell earned her second win of the season, throwing five innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out three. Eyre came on to earn the save, tossing a perfect final two innings, retiring all six batters she face, while recording three strikeouts.
Purdue Fort Wayne wraps up the Black & Gold Tournament tomorrow, February 17. The Mastodons will face Jacksonville State at 10 a.m. ET, and then finish their suspended game against Alabama State. The game against ASU will resume in the top of the sixth with the Mastodons leading 7-4.
