Softball Wins Resumed Game over ASU, Falls to Gamecocks

Against JSU, eight of the Mastodon starters recorded a hit, led by Lexi Smalarz going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Lacey Wilzbacher also finished with two hits in the game.
The Gamecocks got on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the first. The Mastodons answered back in the bottom half when on the 12th pitch of Morganne Denny's at-bat, she delivered an RBI single to left.
After Jacksonville State scored twice in the third, the Mastodons got a run back in the fourth on an RBI single by Smalarz. JSU added three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh for the final score.
Shaina Eyre suffered the loss, striking out five while scattering eight hits in six innings of work. Lauren McConnell came on to throw the final inning allowing one run on two hits.
Purdue Fort Wayne and Alabama State resumed their game from Friday night when field conditions halted play with the 'Dons leading 7-4 in the top of the sixth. The Mastodons had broken the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth.
When play resumed, two days and nearly 36 hours later, the Mastodons went right back to work on the Hornets, scoring a pair of runs in the sixth. Wilzbacher brought home the first run on a suicide squeeze bunt. Denny later singled to shallow right field to bring home the second run. Alabama State scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and had the winning run at the plate, but McConnell ended the rally to secure the victory.
For the game, Denny finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Lauren Watson was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Alise Hale collected a pair of hits and scored twice, while Wilzbacher drove in two runs and scored two more.
McConnell threw a complete game, improving her record to 3-1 on the season. She allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out three batters.
Purdue Fort Wayne has the week off before returning to action to kick off Spring Break, March 1-3 at the Cougar Classic hosted by SIUE.
