ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team earned a split on Opening Day, as the Mastodons fell to Green Bay 3-1 in game one, before coming back to defeat Evansville 3-1 in game two.
For the day, Morganne Denny led the team with three hits and an RBI. Brooke Imel and Sydney Windlan each had a pair of hits, while Windlan led the team with two runs scored. In all, seven different Mastodons recorded a hit on the day.
In the opener against Green Bay, the Phoenix pushed across runs in the second, third and sixth innings. The 'Dons looked to make a comeback in the seventh. After a walk to Alise Hale, Windlan delivered a bunt single, which moved Hale to third, before she scored on a throwing error. The Mastodons brought the tying run to the plate, but a double play would ended their comeback.
Shaina Eyre suffered the loss, throwing four innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. Alyssa Malicki came on to throw the final two innings, striking out two while allowing one run and three hits.
The second game saw Evansville jump out to the early lead with a solo home run in the first. The 'Dons took the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs. After a walk and a bunt single, the Mastodons got on the board as Windlan scored on a wild pitch. A pair of walks loaded the bases, before Denny brought home Imel on a single through the left side.
The Mastodons tacked on a run in the sixth thanks to back-to-back singles from Windlan and Abby Baez.
Lauren McConnell earned her first career win in relief for the 'Dons. McConnell threw the final five innings, allow no runs on five hits while striking out five. Malicki started in the circle for the Mastodons, allowing one run on one hit and recording a strikeout.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns to action tomorrow, February 9, to take on Loyola-Chicago at 5:30 p.m. ET followed by Detroit Mercy at 8 p.m. ET.
