Baseball Scores Three In The Eighth To Defeat WIU 8-6

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A three-run eighth inning lifted the Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team to an 8-6 victory over Western Illinois on Thursday (May 16) afternoon at Mastodon Field.

Andrew Lawvere and Aaron Chapman each had two hits. Lawvere had a pair of big hits in the game. In the fourth he doubled off the center field wall with the bases loaded. His two-out hit scored three runs to give the 'Dons a 5-4 advantage. In the eighth he stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. He hit a double to left field that tied the game at six. Later in the inning Jack Lang flew out to center to score Robert Young III and Trenton Stoner singled in a run to make the score 8-6.

Duane Miller threw a scoreless eighth and then, thanks to the 'Dons taking the lead in the bottom half of the frame, tossed a scoreless ninth to get the win. He is now 1-0 on the year. Chase Phelps allowed six runs (five earned) with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings to get a no-decision. WIU starter Jace Warkentien came out in the eighth and also earned a no-decision. WIU reliever Austin Emanuel took the loss. He is 2-3 on the season.

Young scored three of Purdue Fort Wayne's eight runs. Young had a walk and a hit by pitch to go with a hit. The 'Dons worked five walks on the day.

WIU falls to 20-29 (14-14 Summit). The 'Dons improve to 7-43 (2-26 Summit). The Mastodons and Fighting Leathernecks will play game two of their league series on Friday at 2 p.m. It will be Vs. Cancer Day. Fans looking to support Vs. Cancer can click here.
