HOW DID SHE GET HERE?:
Purdue Fort Wayne's Emma Rafuse qualified for a pair of events in the 2019 NCAA Women's Track and Field East Preliminary. She will compete in the 10K and the 5K. Rafuse earned a second place finish in the 5K at the recent Summit League Track and Field Outdoor Championship. Her time of 16:46.44 was just six seconds behind South Dakota State's Rachel King who won the race with a time of 16:40.98. Rafuse 10K time of 34:34.93 at the Raleigh Relays on March 29 ranks 45th in the East Region. Her 5K time of 16:25.52 on April 25 at the Hillsdale Gina Relays ranks 42nd in the East Region.
MAKING HISTORY:
Rafuse is the fifth woman in program history to qualify for NCAA regionals. Theresa McHugh (javelin) and Rachel Dincoff (shot put) competed in 2013. Crystal Martinez ran in the 3000-meter steeple chase in 2009 and 2008. Crystina Martinez ran the 3000-meter steeple in 2008.
LOOKING AHEAD:
12 competitors from each individual event in Jacksonville will advance to the National Championships June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
