Mastodons Rally For 7-5 Win Over WIU In Eight Innings
5/8/2019 10:44:00 PM | Softball
With the Mastodons down 5-3, Camryn Mosher opened the seventh with a single through the right side. A strikeout and a ground out moved Mosher to second with two outs. Down two runs and with only one out to play with the Mastodons didn't say die. Lacey Wilzbacher dropped a single to center field to score Mosher. Brooke Imel stepped to the plate and on an 0-2 pitch doubled to the warning track in right center. Her hit easily scored Mosher to knot the game at five.
The comeback in the seventh was set up thanks to a two-run sixth when Alise Hale worked a bases loaded walk and then Morganne Denny singled in Wilzbacher. Both runs scored with two outs to make the score 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh the 'Dons used a 6-4-3 double play to move the game to extras. In the eighth, Denny singled with one out and Sydney Windlan laid down a perfect bunt to put runners on first and second with one out. Abby Baez followed with the game winning hit, a double to left center on a 1-2 count.
Up 7-5 in the eighth, Lauren McConnell picked up one of her five strikeouts to start the frame. But WIU followed with the next two batters reaching base. No worries for the 'Dons, as Alyssa Malicki entered and earned two quick outs to end the game.
Malicki picked up the save. McConnell received the win after allowing no runs and just one hit in 3.1 innings of work. The 'Dons defeated Western Illinois pitcher Emily Ira who a day earlier was named to the All-Summit League First Team.
Wilzbacher, Imel, Denny and Baez each had two hits for the 'Dons. Wilzbacher scored twice.
The 'Dons will now play No. 2 South Dakota on Thursday (May 9) at 3:30 p.m. ET. A win and the 'Dons will play the winner of No. 1 North Dakota State and No. 4 South Dakota State on Friday at 2 p.m. ET. If the 'Dons fall to South Dakota, they will play the loser of the South Dakota State and North Dakota State at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday.
WIU ends their season 20-20 with Purdue Fort Wayne's win snapping their nine-game win streak. The Mastodons are now 10-37.
