Scouting the Trojans
Troy is 3-1 on the young season, topping Lipscomb 2-0, Charleston 8-3 and North Florida 3-0 in the Trojan Classic. Western Kentucky is the one loss for Troy, but that came in an eight-inning 3-2 game. Logan Calhoun is leading the team with four hits in 10 at bats. Kelly Horne has the only home run of the season for Troy. All three pitchers have ERAs under 0.70.
Scouting the Golden Eagles
Southern Miss is also 4-1 this year, with two wins over Mississippi Valley State, one over Saint Louis and one over Southern. Last season the Golden Eagles went 30-22, falling to UTSA in the Conference USA championship. Madison Rayner is leading the team with a .778 batting average, with four triples already this season.
Scouting the Owls
Kennesaw State is a familiar foe for Purdue Fort Wayne this season. The Mastodons already played the Owls twice this season, dropping both contests. The Owls are 4-0 with the other two wins coming over Jacksonville State. Before the Owls join the 'Dons at the Troy Invitational, they will play Auburn on Thursday (Feb. 13). Brea Dickey has eight hits and five RBI this year. She lead the team in hits, but Cheyanne Sales leads the squad with eight RBI. The pitching staff has not allowed an earned run this year.
Scouting the Panthers
Eastern Illinois is 4-1 in the 2020 season, with W's over Akron (twice), Winthrop and Samford. The Panthers' second game against Samford was a 16-11 shootout that featured 11 runs by Eastern Illinois in the fifth inning, which kept them from falling by the mercy rule. Hannah Cravens has two homers and nine RBI this season to lead the team in both categories.
Young Bucks... I Mean... Mastodons
The Mastodons have just two seniors on the 2020 roster, Brooke Imel and Maria Palmegiani. There are seven juniors, six sophomores and four freshmen on the squad this season.
We Like These Freshmen!
Purdue Fort Wayne freshman Madeline Swart is leading the team with three hits this season. She also has two RBI and a run to her name. Fellow freshman Mariah Grant has a pair of hits, has drawn three walks, and has two runs.
New Horizons
The 2020 campaign will be the final for the Mastodons in the Summit League. Next season the Mastodons will join the Horizon League. The longest trip in the Horizon League, Green Bay, at six hours, will match the shortest trip for the Mastodons in the Summit League (Western Illinois). The Mastodons joined the Summit League in 2007-08 making the 2019-20 season their 13th in the League.
Horizon League Foes This Year
Purdue Fort Wayne will play against four Horizon League schools this season. The 'Dons will face Wright State twice in the Huddle House Classic, Northern Kentucky at the Coach B Classic, UIC in the Billiken Spring Tournament, and Green Bay will be the home opener for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne went 0-3 at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial tournament, but featured an 8-7 game against Jacksonville State. Freshman Mariah Grant and senior Brooke Imel each had two runs in that contest.
