Offense Rolls, But Mastodons Drop Two Games at Troy Invitational
2/14/2020 11:06:00 PM | Softball
GAME 1
The offense exploded against Southeast Missouri, but it still wasn't enough to take down the Redhawks on Friday afternoon in a 3:45 marathon. The Mastodons had 18 hits, which is the most in a game since April 24, 2006, when the 'Dons had 18 against Dayton.
SEMO got on the scoreboard first, with two runs in the top of the second. The 'Dons answered in the third with one after Mariah Grant stole second, opening up a path for Madeline Swart to score on the throw.
The fourth was scoreless on both sides, but the Redhawks added two in the fifth on a home run. Purdue Fort Wayne repaid the favor in the bottom of the inning after Kyndell Ethridge knocked in Brooke Imel, then Alaina White homered to bring Ethridge in. SEMO put five up in the sixth, then the 'Dons scored two on Ashley Haas singled in Swart and Morganne Denny brought Imel home.
The Redhawks added three more in the top of the seventh to put some pressure on the 'Dons, but the bats continued to thrive in the bottom. Purdue Fort Wayne put six runs up behind two RBI from Lexi Smalarz, one from Swart, and two from Denny. Denny hit the long ball into left field, scoring Haas. This was the 12th home run of her career.
In extras, SEMO put two more up in the eighth, but freshman Olivia Stansbury had her first-career home run to bring in White and tie the game at 14. The Redhawks put the winning run up in the ninth after scoring two on a double. Haas scored again in the ninth off Ethridge's single, but that was the last tally in the scoring column for the Mastodons.
Swart led the team with four runs. The 'Dons had three homers in the contest, which were the first three of the season.
Lauren McConnell took the loss to move to 0-1. Kaylee Anderson earned the win to move to 1-0. SEMO improves to 1-1.
GAME 2
In what ended up being the nightcap, the 'Dons kept the host Trojans off the scoreboard until the fourth inning. Purdue Fort Wayne scored in the second inning after Alise Hale knocked in Denny with the bases loaded.
Shaina Eyre threw the first three innings scoreless, but Troy put up five runs on her in the fourth inning. Four singles and a double made the difference as the Trojans scored the game-winning run on Kaylee Chapman's double that scored three. They added another in the fifth on a single up the right side.
Haas got on base in the sixth after a single up the right side. Denny continued her hot day with a home run over the center field wall to score two, but this would be the last the 'Dons scored.
Denny led the team with two hits and two runs.
Eyre (0-1) was credited with the loss. Libby Baker for Troy earned the win while Leanna Johnson picked up a save.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 0-5. Troy improved to 5-1. The Mastodons will take the field again on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET when they play Southern Miss. They will also play a familiar foe in Kennesaw State at 8 p.m. The Owls topped the Mastodons twice last weekend at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial.
