Baseball Opens 2020 With Win at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. – Cameron Boyd struck out a career-high eight batters and Robert Young III drove in four runs to help the Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team to a 10-8 victory at Longwood on Friday (Feb. 14) afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
Boyd sat down eight Lancers in 5.0 innings of work, giving up four runs. He is 1-0 on the season. Longwood pitcher Logan Berrier is 0-1 after giving up five runs in an inning of relief. Sean Ferguson earned his third career save for the Mastodons.
After Longwood scored two runs in the first inning, the 'Dons took their first lead of the game in the fourth at 4-2. Robert Young III doubled down the left field line to knock in Garrett Mohler and Jack Lang. Longwood tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth but the 'Dons had an answer in the fifth when Dylan Stewart singled up the middle to knock in Lang and Charles Lyons. His hit made the score 6-4. In the sixth it was Young with the big hit again. He tripled to center to score Mohler and Aaron Chapman and make the score 8-4. Young came around on a wild pitch to put the 'Dons up 9-4.
Young and Stewart each finished with two hits. Young knocked in four runs thanks to the double and triple. Mohler, Trenton Stoner and Lang each scored two runs. The Mastodon offense worked 10 walks.
The Mastodon defense didn't commit a single error on the day.
The 'Dons are 1-0 while Longwood is 0-1. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday. It will be a pair of seven-inning contests.
