Coach B Classic Will Host the Mastodons This Weekend

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Purdue Fort Wayne softball heads southwest this week, hitting the road to Carbondale, Illinois for the Coach B Classic. The Mastodons will face Creighton, Southern Illinois, Northern Kentucky and Murray State.

Scouting the Bluejays
Creighton is 7-5 on the year and is coming off a 2-1 outing at the Tiger Classic. The Bluejays managed 7-2 and 6-2 wins over Rider and Central Connecticut State, respectively, before falling to Bowling Green 7-1. Creighton has played one Summit League team already this season: North Dakota in the H-E-B Classic, which resulted in a 7-5 win for the Bluejays. Kiele Miller is leading Creighton from the pitching circle with a 3-3 record and a 1.83 ERA.
Scouting the Salukis
Southern Illinois is 6-6 this season and most recently had a 3-1 week at the FGCU Spring Break Classic. This tournament featured a 4-1 win over Fordham, a 5-4 win over Harvard, and a 2-1 win over Michigan State. The Salukis dropped their last game of the tournament 2-1 to UMass Lowell. Kyleigh Decker leads the team with 10 RBIs this year. She has eight hits, including a double, and seven runs.
Scouting the Norse
Northern Kentucky is 4-5 on the season and has played in two tournaments thus far: the Belmont Invitational and the Gardner-Webb Invitational. The Norse had more success at Belmont, where they won two games against Western Michigan and one over the host Bruins. The Norse squeaked out a 4-3 win over Mount St. Mary's last week, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Taylor Ginther is leading the team with a 2-2 record and a 2.43 ERA.
Scouting the Racers
The Racers are 9-4 in 2020 and are coming off a polarizing weekend at the Stinger Classic in Montgomery, Alabama. Murray State beat Howard 14-4 and Grambling State 11-0, but dropped a pair of games to North Alabama 7-0 and 6-0. The Racers have played two Summit League teams already this season, with a 1-0 win over South Dakota State and a 9-8 loss to South Dakota in 10 innings. Jenna Veber is the Racers' best pitcher so far this season, tossing a 1.83 ERA for a 2-2 record.
Leaping in 2020
The Mastodons will play against Northern Kentucky on Saturday, February 29, which will be the first leap day game for the program since 2004, when the Mastodons beat Albany 2-1 and fell to Boston College. That is the only other time in school history that the softball team has competed on a leap day.
That's a LONG Game!
Purdue Fort Wayne's game against Southeast Missouri was 3 hours and 45 minutes, featuring 31 runs and 37 hits combined between the two squads. This is the longest game on record for Purdue Fort Wayne in the Division I era (2002-present).
Smacking the Long Ball
The Mastodons have eight home runs through seven games this season, which is over half of what they had last season at 13. Freshman Olivia Stansbury leads the team with three, Morganne Denny has two, and Madeline Swart, Alaina White and Camryn Mosher each have one.
RBI Machine
Morganne Denny has 10 RBIs this season, including three against both Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri. Against SEMO and Troy, she had a two-run homer in both.
Newcomer Production
There are a few Mastodons newcomers that have been leading the team in major statistical categories through 11 games. Freshmen Alaina White and Madeline Swart lead the team in batting average with .381 and .351, respectively. Swart leads the team in hits and runs with 13 and nine. Freshman Olivia Stansbury has the most Mastodon home runs with three.
New Horizons
The 2020 campaign will be the final for the Mastodons in the Summit League. Next season the Mastodons will join the Horizon League. The longest trip in the Horizon League, Green Bay, at six hours, will match the shortest trip for the Mastodons in the Summit League (Western Illinois). The Mastodons joined the Summit League in 2007-08 making the 2019-20 season their 13th in the League.
Horizon League Foes This Year
Purdue Fort Wayne will play against four Horizon League schools this season. The 'Dons played Wright State twice in the Huddle House Classic and will play Northern Kentucky at the Coach B Classic, UIC in the Billiken Spring Tournament, and Green Bay will be the home opener for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Last Time Out
The Mastodons played four games in the Huddle House Classic, which featured two against Wright State and two with the host UT Martin. On the first day, the 'Dons had a pair of one-run losses.
Coming Up
The Governors Classic will be the next destination for Purdue Fort Wayne, where the Mastodons will face Bradley and UMass Lowell twice each, and the host Austin Peay once. The games will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (March 6-8) in Clarksville, Tennessee.
