Mastodon Softball Drops a Pair in Coach B Classic Day One

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Purdue Fort Wayne softball dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the Coach B Classic on Friday (Feb. 28), falling to Creighton 14-1 and host Southern Illinois 9-0.
GAME 1
Creighton caught fire on the offensive end right out of the gate, knocking in 10 runs in the opening frame. Brooke Imel got on base and found her way into scoring position after Olivia Stansbury drew a walk, but they were both stranded in the bottom of the first.
In the bottom of the fourth, Kyndell Ethridge scored the lone run for the Mastodons, finding her way on base after a Creighton miscue. She was brought around by Alaina White drawing the attention of the defense on a fielder's choice to move into scoring position. Rachel Everson was the Mastodon that recorded the RBI, doubling to left center.
Lauren McConnell threw a pair of scoreless innings before Emma McMillan came in to throw the final inning, in which McMillan held Creighton at their final run count of 14. The pitching staff for Purdue Fort Wayne combined for four strikeouts against the Bluejays. Megan Segree was credited with the loss, moving to 0-3. Creighton's Mikayla Santa Cruz got the win to go to 4-2. Creighton improved to 8-5.
GAME 2
Southern Illinois started the game with two two-run innings to take an early 4-0 lead. Madeline Swart got on first in the fourth to try and get a run on the board for the Mastodons, but she was left on.
In the sixth, Smalarz outran the throw from the pitcher to get a single. Swart followed it up by getting on base, but the 'Dons remained scoreless for the frame. SIU managed four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game as a double finished things off.
Shaina Eyre threw the entirety of the game, taking the loss and moving to 1-3 on the season. She threw two scoreless innings for the Mastodons. Claire Miller got the win for Southern Illinois, as she moves to 1-1. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 1-12, while Southern Illinois improves to 7-6. The Mastodons are back in action tomorrow (Feb. 29) when they play Northern Kentucky at 10 a.m. ET.
