LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Cameron Boyd went 5.0 innings and Lucas Kolovitz knocked in both Mastodon runs in a 4-2 loss for the Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team at New Mexico State on Friday (Feb. 28) evening.
NMSU opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning. The 'Dons knotted it up the next half inning when Kolovitz singled Robert Young III home. The Aggies scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead. In the seventh, Garett Lake opened the frame with a single for the 'Dons. He moved to second on a groundout and then stole third base. Lake then scored on a Kolovitz single with two outs.
Boyd started for the 'Dons. He gave up four runs. He is now 1-2 on the season. Michael Madura pitched the final three innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three. He now has nine strikeouts in 11.2 innings of work this season.
Chance Hroch tossed 7.0 innings for NMSU and is now 2-0. Mitchell Allen earned his first save of the year for the Aggies.
NMSU improves to 9-1. Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 3-5. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
