'Dons Out-Hit Racers, But Fall to Murray State and Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Despite out-hitting Murray State, Purdue Fort Wayne dropped a pair of games on the final day of the Coach B Classic (Sunday, March 1). The 'Dons fell to the Racers 5-2 and Southern Illinois 8-0.
GAME 1
Purdue Fort Wayne found the bases on the first at bat of the game against Murray State, as Madeline Swart hit a single up the middle. She finished with three hits on four at bats, which led the team. She did not score in the first inning, but did in the sixth, when the Mastodons put both of their runs on the scoreboard.
In the sixth, Purdue Fort Wayne started things off with a pair of back-to-back singles from the freshman duo Swart and Mariah Grant. Morganne Denny hit a single into center field, scoring Swart. Grant scored on a Murray State throwing error.
Murray State led wire-to-wire, as the Racers scored one in the first, third and sixth innings, and two in the fifth.
The Mastodons out-hit the Racers 7-5. Swart had three of the 'Dons' seven. She leads the team in batting average at .358 for the season.
Lauren McConnell tossed all six innings, notching four strikeouts. She was the pitcher of record, moving to 0-7. Murray State's Jenna Veber got the win for the Racers to move to 3-3. Taylor Makowsky picked up a save. Murray State improved to 11-5 on the season.
GAME 2
Shaina Eyre started things off on the defensive end, holding Southern Illinois scoreless in the opening two frames.
Alaina White and Swart were the only 'Dons to record hits, as White had a single to center in the second and Swart knocked a double to left center in the fifth.
The Salukis found home three times in the third inning, then added on two more in the fourth. SIU was able to win it with a walk-off double up the middle.
Eyre fell to 1-3 with the loss, despite striking out a pair. SIU's Sarah Harness picked up the win, moving to 6-4. Southern Illinois improves to 10-6, while Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 1-15. The Mastodons will be back in action on Friday, March 6, when they compete in Austin Peay's Governors Classic. They will play Bradley twice, UMass Lowell twice and Austin Peay once.
