'Dons Travel to Austin Peay for Governors Classic

CLARKSVILLE, TENN. - Purdue Fort Wayne softball heads south this week, hitting the road to Clarksville, Tennessee for the Governors Classic which will be hosted by Austin Peay. The Mastodons will face Bradley, UMass Lowell, and Austin Peay.

Scouting the Braves
Bradley is 11-7 on the year and is coming off a 4-1 outing at the Gaucho Classic. The Braves managed two wins over Portland State, while adding 12-0 and 6-4 wins over Saint Peter's and UC Santa Barbara, respectively. UC Santa Barbara did take a win against Bradley who fell 6-4 in the second game against the Gauchos. Grace French is leading Bradley in the pitching circle with a 4-0 record and a 2.68 ERA. Sydney Young and Kealia Wysocki lead the team with .429 and .417 batting averages each.
Scouting the River Hawks
UMass Lowell is 4-6 this season and most recently had a 2-3 weekend played at the FGCU Spring Break Classic. The River Hawks earned a 2-1 win over Michigan State as well as a 2-1 win over Southern Illinois. Harvard and Fordham both took wins over the River Hawks resulting in 2-1 scores each game. FGCU took a home win against UMass Lowell, in a 4-1 loss to the River Hawks. Chelsea Runyon and Lovina Capria lead the team in pitching. Lovina holds an ERA of 2.03 having pitched in 4 games while Runyon holds an ERA of 1.40 having pitched in 2 games.
Scouting the Governors
Austin Peay carries a 6-10 record on the season so far, playing the latest in the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Spring Fling tournament last weekend. The Governors accumulated two wins over the IUPUI Jaguars in a 10-3 win on Saturday and a 11-10 win on Sunday. The Governors could not find success against Illinois State who took a 11-4 win and a 5-4 win against Austin Peay. They also fell to Western Kentucky in a 8-4 loss. Lexi Osowski leads the team at the plate with a batting average of 0.442 and 14 RBIs to her name.
That's a LONG Game!
Purdue Fort Wayne's game against Southeast Missouri was 3 hours and 45 minutes, featuring 31 runs and 37 hits combined between the two squads. This is the longest game on record for Purdue Fort Wayne in the Division I era (2002-present).
Smacking the Long Ball
The Mastodons have eight home runs through seven games this season, more than half of what they had last season at 13. Freshman Olivia Stansbury leads the team with three, Morganne Denny has two, and Madeline Swart, Alaina White and Camryn Mosher each have one.
RBI Machine
Morganne Denny has a team-high 11 RBIs this season, including three against both Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri. Against SEMO and Troy, she had a two-run homer in both.
Newcomer Production
There are a few Mastodon newcomers that have been leading the team in major statistical categories through 16 games. Freshmen Alaina White and Madeline Swart lead the team in batting average with .324 and .358, respectively. Swart leads the team in hits (19), doubles (4) and runs (10). New Horizons
The 2020 campaign will be the final for the Mastodons in the Summit League. Next season the Mastodons will join the Horizon League. The longest trip in the Horizon League, Green Bay, at six hours, will match the shortest trip for the Mastodons in the Summit League (Western Illinois). The Mastodons joined the Summit League in 2007-08 making the 2019-20 season their 13th in the League.
Horizon League Foes This Year
Purdue Fort Wayne will play against four Horizon League schools this season. The 'Dons played Wright State twice in the Huddle House Classic and Northern Kentucky at the Coach B Classic. They will play UIC in the Billiken Spring Tournament, and Green Bay will be the home opener for Purdue Fort Wayne.
Last Time Out
The Mastodons played in five games at the Coach B Classic against Creighton, Southern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Murray State and Southern Illinois. The 'Dons out-hit Northern Kentucky 8-6 and Murray State 7-5 on this trip.
Coming Up
Purdue Fort Wayne will return to their home state of Indiana to face-off against the Evansville Purple Aces in an away game on Tuesday, March 10. The Purple Aces will host the 'Dons at Cooper Stadium.
