3/6/2020 5:52:00 PM | Softball
GAME 1
Seven innings wasn't enough to determine a winner between Purdue Fort Wayne and Bradley. The Mastodons scored three runs in the eighth to give them the win over the 11-8 Braves.
Mariah Grant started off the last inning with a triple into right center and Madeline Swart brought her in to score the winning run. Morganne Denny reached on an error to bring in Swart, then brought in Brooke Imel by drawing a throw on an attempted steal. Then the Mastodons had a perfect bottom of the eighth with three straight ground outs.
The Mastodons steadily built a lead throughout the game, as Kyndell Ethridge had two doubles in consecutive at-bats (first and third innings) to score Imel and Grant. In the fourth, Grant hit a single to the pitcher to score Alaina White. In the fifth, Ethridge and Imel scored on a throwing error from home to try to catch Ethridge stealing second. Grant scored again in the sixth from third base as Imel drew a throw to second on an attempted steal.
Bradley make the contest interesting by scoring six runs in the sixth.
Shaina Eyre picked up her first win of the season to move to 1-4. She tossed the first five innings, and returned to pitch the final 2.1 for a total of 7.1 innings on the day. She struck out six Braves. Morgan Radford fell to 2-4 with the loss.
GAME 2
From the outset against UMass Lowell, it was a fast start offensively for both squads. Purdue Fort Wayne began with three runs in the first, as White singled to score Imel and Swart. Olivia Stansbury followed White with a double to go up 3-0, but the River Hawks responded with two runs in the first and four in the second.
Stansbury continued her strong offensive day in the fourth as she hit a long ball over the right field fence. UMass Lowell scored one in each of the fourth and fifth innings which gave the River Hawks the score with which they would finish the game.
Stansbury led the Mastodons with two hits agains the River Hawks, both for extra bases.
Lauren McConnell pitched for 4.2 innings with five strikeouts. She took the loss and is now 0-8. Emma McMillan threw 1.1 innings without a River Hawk hit.
