Mastodons Topple UMass Lowell, Fall to Bradley
3/7/2020 11:19:00 PM | Softball
GAME 1
Purdue Fort Wayne did not score until the seventh inning, but the Mastodons got the job done against the River Hawks of UMass Lowell. A four-run seventh and a three-run ninth was all it took for the 'Dons to get the win. A three-run homer in the ninth from Alaina White drove in the game-winning run.
Shaina Eyre only saw 15 batters in the first four innings, holding the River Hawks scoreless until the fifth. The Mastodons loaded the bases in the fourth, but were also left without a run. UMass Lowell scored four in the bottom of the fifth to open up the cap on the scoring.
The runs didn't come for Purdue Fort Wayne until the seventh, but they came in a big way. Abby Baez started it off with a single to center field to score Olivia Stansbury. This loaded the bases as Brooke Imel came up to the plate with two outs. She blasted a home run to left field to score Baez and Rachel Everson, but more importantly tied the contest up heading to the bottom of the seventh.
The River Hawks managed to get a baserunner to third in the seventh, but the Mastodons were the first team to score in extra innings. In the ninth, Imel bunted to get on base and Alise Hale drew a walk to set up White's three-run homer. This gave the 'Dons a three-run cushion of which UMass Lowell could not dig out. The River Hawks did score two in the ninth, but Purdue Fort Wayne got the necessary three outs to end the 2:49 nine-inning thriller.
Eyre picked up the win to move to 3-4, Chelsea Runyon fell to 0-3 with the loss. UMass Lowell fell to 5-7.
GAME 2
Bradley opened up the scoring in the first inning going up 1-0 with a run-of-the-mill single up the middle.
Purdue Fort Wayne had two unanswered runs come in the second and third. Stansbury knocked in White with a double to left center in the second, and Morganne Denny had a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in Imel. This gave the Mastodons a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
This was the last that Purdue Fort Wayne scored for the evening, but Bradley re-took the lead in the fourth. A three-run fourth, another in the fifth, and a five-run explosion in the sixth put the Braves up eight.
Lauren McConnell falls to 0-9 with the loss. Bradley improves to 13-9, while Purdue Fort Wayne moves to 3-17. The Mastodons are back in action on Sunday (March 8) when they play the host of the Governors Classic: Austin Peay. First pitch for that contest will be at 2 p.m. ET.
