MT PLEASANT, S.C – Trenton Stoner had three hits, Cameron Boyd picked up the win and Chase Phelps earned the save in Purdue Fort Wayne's 9-4 baseball victory over Longwood on Saturday (March 7).
Boyd went 6.0 innings to move his record to 2-2 with the win. He allowed four runs while picking up six strikeouts. Chase Phelps threw the final three innings, giving up just one hit for his first save.
The Mastodons went up for good thanks to a bases loaded triple by Aaron Chapman in the third. It made the score 3-2 after Longwood scored two runs in the first inning. The fourth inning saw the 'Dons go up 5-3 thanks to a Stoner 2-RBI double.
Longwood scored two in the sixth to make it 5-4, but it could have been worse. Boyd stranded the bases loaded thanks with a strikeout looking to end the frame. He gave way to Phelps in the seventh who went the rest of the way.
The 'Dons added four more runs to pad their lead, including a 3-RBI double by Travis Upp in the eighth.
Purdue Fort Wayne had 12 hits on the day. Chapman, Jack Lang and Drew Reich each had two hits in addition to Stoner's three hits.
The Mastodons improve to 4-9. Longwood falls to 4-11. The 'Dons will play Sacred Heart on Sunday to wrap up the event in South Carolina.
