Purdue Fort Wayne Gets Back in Win Column at Green Bay
10/22/2021 9:23:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team picked up a Horizon League win over Green Bay on Friday night (Oct. 22) with a 3-1 win (25-18, 25-20, 26-28, 25-15) in the Kress Center.
The Mastodons' offense was on fire in the opening set, as they hit a scorching .424 with 15 kills on 33 attacks. The 'Dons had a 4-0 stretch early on that gave them a 6-5 advantage. This stretch included two kills from Madelyn Wurster and an ace from Rachael Crucis. Katie Crowe had two consecutive kills later on to give the 'Dons a 20-14 edge, and enough of a cushion to coast to the end of the set. The 'Dons took the last three points of the set with a kill from Molly Mirabelli, another ace from Crucis, and a kill from Maggie Castleman.
While the offense slowed down a little bit in the second set, it was still enough to build up a comfortable lead. The 'Dons still hit .294, jumping out to a 14-6 lead after Jen Springer had an ace. Nicole Jones found her offensive rhythm in set two, as she had four kills from the setter spot, including the penultimate point of the frame.
Purdue Fort Wayne went on a pair of 3-0 runs that each forced Green Bay to burn a timeout. Both runs were capped off by a kill from Castleman. After the Phoenix timeouts, they chipped away at the Mastodon lead and tied the set at 20. This paved the way for the set to go into extras, and ultimately allowed Green Bay to take the set 28-26.
The Mastodons bound out to an 11-2 lead in set four, an opening run that featured two aces from Crucis and one from Wurster. The aces continued when Madison Gates and Crowe got one each to help push the lead to 18-9. Crowe got her 12th kill of the night to give the 'Dons the win.
Four Mastodons reached double-figures in kills: Wurster (13), Crowe (12), Castleman (11) and Ramei Jackson (10). Three had 12 or more digs: Crucis (17), Gates (12) and Crowe (12). Crucis finished with four aces. The Mastodons finished with a season-high .336 hitting percentage.
With her 12 kills on Friday, Crowe moved into fifth in program history in career kills. She now owns 1,515, passing Rebekah Roehm (1,506, 2006-09). She needs 70 to pass Nicole Rightnowar (1,584, 2015-18) for fourth. Crowe also moved into second in career matches played with 136, passing Julie Huber (135, 1989-92). She needs to play in seven more matches to tie Andi Reichhart (143, 1994-97) and become the program's all-time leader in matches played.
The Mastodons improve to 6-19, 4-8 in the Horizon League. Green Bay falls to 10-12, 5-5. The Mastodons have a match on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET at UIC before returning home to Fort Wayne. The 'Dons will play their last five matches of the regular season at home.
