Kirkwood and Haney Earn Second To Lead the 'Dons on Day One

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Dylan Kirkwood and Miranda Haney earn a spot on the podium for their respective events on Friday (Feb. 26) at the Lutheran Health Fieldhouse on day one of the 2021 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Kirkwood made her mark in the first day of competition in the pentathlon and earned second place with 3,352 points, a new school record. In the 60 meter hurdles, Kirkwood had a time of 8.87. Later on for the pentathlon, she competed in the high jump (1.60m), the shot put (9.09m), the long jump (4.98m) and the 800 meter run (2:33.10). Kirkwood surpassed the previous school record of 3,120 by over 200 points. Rounding out for the 'Dons in the women's pentathlon were Ramey Wilder in 16th (2,535) and Sophia Buck in 17th (2,490).
Haney jumped her way to a spot on the podium in the high jump. She placed second with a mark of 1.68m, tying the school record set in 2019 by Naimah Slaughter.
Freshman Madison King competed in the 5000 meter run and finished in fifth place with a time of 17:42.00. Mallory Clements had a time of 18:50.30 (21st) and Kathy Potter was in 22nd (19:09.40). Kiannah Sarver (25th, 19:44.14), Mercedes Sarver (26th, 21:42.36) and Michaela Sheets (27th, 21:56.78) rounded out the Mastodons.
In the distance medley relay, Gianna Stanich, Brayden Langdon, Makaila Groves and Angelina Sedlaczek finished in eighth with a time of 12:57.06.
Abbigail Garwood threw a mark of 12.37m in the women's weight throw and finished in 15th. Maddi Hardin was right behind Garwood in 16th with a mark of 11.86m.
The 'Dons will head into day two on Saturday (Feb. 27) with an overall team score of 21, placing them in fourth. The day will begin at 9 a.m. ET with the remainder of the men's heptathlon.
